The state should assume control over the construction of Ziemelu (Northern) Tunnel under the Daugava River in Riga, New Era parliamentary group's chairman Krisjanis Karins told LETA.
As reported, JL deputies also insist that interests of the Riga City Council at the Riga Free Port be limited and interests of the state heightened.
Karins believes that not only the port, but the Daugava Northern tunnel is also a project of national importance because it will connect Kurzeme and Vidzeme provinces.
According to Karins, the Riga City Council's actions regarding the construction of the tunnel are hard to understand. "It was unclear yet whether a tunnel or a bridge would be built, but a firm was already selected through a competition to supervise the work," he said.
As reported, the German "Obermayer Planen&Beraten" was selected to supervise the construction of the tunnel, but the Acquisition Control Bureau later banned Riga Regional Development Agency from signing a contract with the Germans. Initial estimates said "Obermayer" would have to be paid about EUR 16 million for supervising the project.
