Yesterday, "TeliaSonera's" president in Norway, Denmark and Baltic countries, Kenneth Karlberg, paid a visit to Latvia and met with Prime Minister Aigars Kalvitis. Karlsberg again expressed desire to purchase state-owned shares in the telecommunications operators "Lattelekom" and "Latvijas mobilais telefons" (LMT).
As Kalvitis told the Latvian Television (LTV) news program "Panorama", no definite reply was given to the "TeliaSonera" representatives.
According to the LTV, experts estimate the value of the state-owned shares in "Lattelekom" at about LVL 290 million, whereas LMT - even at LVL 350 million.
Back in September 2004, "TeliaSonera" already announced that it would be more advantageous for the state of Latvia to sell its stakes in "Lattelekom" and "Latvijas mobilais telefons" than to retain the current situation.
The former Indulis Emsis-led government had declared quite the contrary intent - to increase state control over "Lattelekom" and LMT. Emsis pointed out that raising competitiveness on the telecommunications market and cutting tariffs would be in the interests of the state.
"TeliaSonera" currently holds a 49 percent stake in "Lattelekom" and 49 percent interest in LMT. "Lattelekom" itself owns 23 percent of LMT shares. "TeliaSonera" believes that it controls 60.3 percent of LMT shares.
