Munich´s architecture aglow at BAUFollowing on from the resounding success of the first "Long Night of Architecture" (LNDA) two years ago, BAU 2013 will be staging a second edition. On Friday, January 18, 2013, around 40 buildings in and around Munich will be opening their doors and inviting the public in to take a closer look.

The idea of forming a link between BAU and the local population with an interest in buildings, via the Long Night of Architecture, was first implemented at BAU 2011, where it met with a tremendous response. Around 14,000 people – ordinary citizens of Munich and the surrounding region, as well as BAU exhibitors and visitors – seized this chance, on a wintry evening, of exploring buildings of architectural interest that are normally closed to the general public.

40 buildings, eleven routes

As in 2011, the plan is for shuttle buses to operate between the individual buildings between 18:30 and midnight, on January 18, 2013. The buses are free to hop on and off any time. One new feature this year is that people can choose between eleven different routes, thus picking out those buildings which interest them most. Buses run every 15 minutes between the different stops. One of the main starting points is Odeonsplatz, from where six of the tours begin. Inside the buses architecture students will be giving information about the buildings coming up next on the tour. Inside the buildings themselves, in many cases lectures or guided tours are on offer, where people can find out more about the background to the building and its special architectural features.

From the ADAC HQ to the Herz Jesu Church

Outstanding buildings such as BMW Welt and the Allianz Arena, both of them stations on the route in 2011, will again feature on the program for 2013. Among the new buildings that were recently opened and therefore new to the LNDA list, are the ADAC headquarters in Hansastrasse and the FOAG building in Messestadt West, plus also the bulthaup building on Prinzregentenplatz. The various tastes and interests of the "architourists" on the LNDA are bound to be met by these and the other architectural delights on the tours, which include for example the BobBeaman Music Club, Munich´s University of Television and Film, the smarthouse, a waterworks management station in the east of the city and the Herz Jesu Church.

Guided tours for BAU participants

As well as the tours open to the general public, there will also be guided tours for BAU exhibitors and visitors. These tours, each with a fixed program, will start at the exhibition center. Advance booking is required. Special group arrangements, with guides or explanations in foreign languages, are also possible.

The "Long Night of Architecture" is being organized by Messe München GmbH, BAU 2013 and the Poing Building Center in cooperation with the City of Munich (town planning and building regulations dept.), the Bavarian government (Supreme Building Authority of the Bavarian State Ministry of the Interior), the Bayerische Architektenkammer and the Bund Deutscher Innenarchitekten. The patron of the event is Christian Ude, the Mayor of Munich.

The Long Night of Architecture is supported by:

Dorma, Saint-Gobain and Velux.
