The wood-processing enterprise "Vulkans" has a new owner - its prior lessee, the joint-stock company "Tukuma MRS", bought the Kuldiga enterprise's immovable property and a part of movable property for the starting price at an auction, the newspaper "Dienas Bizness" reports today.
The wood producer "Tukuma MRS" was the only bidder, the company's board chairman Nikolajs Iskovs confirmed to "Dienas Bizness". "Vulkans" is being prepared for reconstruction now, work on an investment strategy has been launched, Iskovs said but he declined to disclose the projected amount of investments. He also did not want to comment on the current production amounts, turnover and profit or losses.
"We were not the owners of the enterprise until now, and that is why we did not try big investments," Iskovs said. "Vulkans" production needs to be optimized to cut costs. The building and the territory of "Vulkans" obtained by "Tukuma MRS" are in bad condition, which means more money will have to be invested into "Vulkans".
Kuldiga Mayor Edgars Zalans told the newspaper that Kuldiga hoped "Tukuma MRS" would resume production at "Vulkans" glueing facility.
"Only couple tens of thousands lats should be invested to resume production of glued items. This would mean some 100 more jobs. However, I also understand the new owners - the sales market must be organized again, because previous contracts have been lost," Zalans said.
During a meeting with Zalans, Iskovs said that his company planned on scaling down the "Vulkans" territory - it was irrational and inefficient. New equipment is to be bought for "Vulkans" so that its products comply with European Union standards.
Back at the time "Tukuma MRS" was a lessee of "Vulkans", it resumed production at "Vulkans", more than 200 people got their jobs back, said Zalans. He believes that "Tukuma MRS" will be a good manager of "Vulkans", and he is confident that "Vulkans" will not burn again.
"Dienas Bizness" reminds that Kurzeme Regional Court declared "Vulkans" insolvent in March of 2002, following a petition from "Talsu MR". Several fires at "Vulkans" had occurred since 2000, and operations at "Vulkans" could not be fully resumed.
